An Encounter with Traditional Sicilian Instruments
Giorgio Maltese, multinstrumentalist and researcher, offers a lesson-concert on Sicilian music through the live performance of ancient traditional instruments. What is being proposed is the result of personal field research carried out throughout Sicily since 2005, and which has allowed the recovery of instrumental and vocal repertoires that would otherwise have disappeared. Songs and music will be performed and "recounted" through stories and anecdotes relating to the meetings with the elderly musicians, shepherds and farmers, who allowed the recovery of these repertoires.
The encounter is intended as an authentic experience, exposing listeners to the unexpected and ancient world of Sicilian culture that risks being lost and forgotten. The instruments played during the encounter include the Sicilian wind chime (marranzanu); a variety of single and double reed flutes (friscalettu, frautu a paru); single-reed reed flutes (zammaruni), frame tambourine, mandolin, diatonic accordion, zampogna a paru (ciaramedda) and a variety of idiophones (azzarinu, castagnetti) and the conch (brogna).
